Welcome to the AMA West Hare Scrambles!

Real Offroad Racing. Real Terrain. Real Accomplishment.

West Hare Scrambles is where riders from across the West Coast come together to race through all-natural terrain — deserts, mountains, forests, and everything in between.

No groomed tracks. No watering trucks. No artificial obstacles. Just real off-road racing the way it was meant to be.

But here’s the part most people don’t realize…You don’t have to be a Pro to race here.

What Makes West Hare Scrambles Different

West Hare Scrambles travels across the West Coast to bring riders some of the most diverse terrain in off-road racing.

  • One round may take you through open desert valleys. Another through tight forest trails or mountain elevation.
  • Every race is different. Every finish line feels earned.

Riders travel from multiple states to compete because they know one thing: Finishing a West Hare Scramble means something!

Who Can Race?

Short answer: almost anyone.

We offer classes for:

• Novices
• Vet riders
• Women (including a 35+ specific class)
•  Youth (4-15 year olds)
• Amateurs
• Experts and Pros

Whether you’re riding for fun, personal challenge, or competition, there’s a class for you. If you can ride a dirt bike confidently on trails, you can race a hare scramble.

What You’ll Need to Race

Getting started in West Hare Scrambles is easier than most people think. You don’t need a factory bike or a professional pit crew — just a few basic things and a willingness to challenge yourself. Here’s what you’ll need to line up for your first race:

1. A Dirtbike

Any off-road capable dirt bike works. Most riders race bikes from 125cc to 450cc, but you’ll see everything from lightweight trail bikes to full race machines.

The most important thing is that your bike is safe and well maintained.

Before race day, check:

• Tires with good tread
• Working brakes
• Properly tightened bolts
• Chain and sprockets in good condition

If your bike can handle a solid day of trail riding, it can likely handle a hare scramble.

2. Basic Riding Gear

Safety gear is required and helps keep you protected while riding through natural terrain.

Typical gear includes:

• Helmet
• Goggles
• Gloves
• Boots
• Riding jersey and pants

Most riders also wear:

• Chest protector or roost guard
• Knee protection
• Hydration pack

If you already trail ride, you likely already have everything you need.

3. Race Entry + Membership

To compete in a West Hare Scrambles event, riders will need:

  • Race entry for that event- $60 for Amateur (normally $80), $40 for Youth (normally $50) or $20 for Pee Wee (normally $30)
  • Transponder – $10 (If you already have a Moto-Tally transponder, you don’t need to buy one)
  • Numbers- We offer one-time event numbers for $10 OR you can request your own online HERE
  • KoPilot Medical ID Tag- $15 (If you already have a KoPilot ID tag, you don’t need to buy one)
  • AMA Membership- It’s $25 for a one-time pass, or you can get your Annual one here for just $49 HERE

We’ll walk you through the registration process and help make sure you’re in the right class.

4. A Positive Attitude

Your first race isn’t about being the fastest.

It’s about:

• Learning the race format
• Experiencing real off-road terrain
• Pushing yourself
• Crossing the finish line

Ready to Try Your First Race?

Your first start could be the beginning of a life-changing journey!

  1. Load up your dirtbike, gear, a fuel can for refueling during your race.
  2. Arrive early to camp or come the day of the event. If you come early, you are able to ride a bicycle or e-MTB around the course when there is not an active race going on. This gives you plenty of time to get comfortable.
  3. Visit the Registration trailer to register On-Site (so we can meet you and apply the discount!)
  4. Get ready to race! Gear up, fuel up your bike and take your pit supplies to Pit Row (fuel and an absorbent gas mat of some kind).
  5. Find your row on the Start Line
  6. Sit through the Rider’s Meeting
  7. Race! The fun part.
  8. If you place 1st-3rd in your class, you WILL receive a trophy. So stick around!
